Judge Burns was appointed to the County Court bench in 2010. Since taking the bench he has presided over both County Court and Circuit Court dockets including: County Criminal, County Civil, Circuit Criminal, Circuit Civil, Juvenile, and Drug Court.
Prior to his appointment Judge Burns served as an Assistant State Attorney in Charlotte County from 1995 until his judicial appointment. While an Assistant State Attorney he held the positions of Misdemeanor Supervisor, Felony Track Leader, Chairman of the Crimes Against Children/ Special Victim’s Unit for the 20th Judicial Circuit, Felony Division Chief, and Assistant Office Head. For the majority of his career at the State Attorney’s Office he specialized in the prosecution of crimes against children including neglect, abuse, sexual abuse and child homicide cases.
Judge Burns received his J.D. in 1994 from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma Washington. He also holds a J.D. from Seattle University School of Law in Seattle Washington. He received his B.S. in Political Science from THE FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY in 1989. (Go Seminoles!!!)
Judge Burns was born and raised in Central N.Y. but has considered Florida his home since attending F.S.U. Judge Burns is married and has one child.
He is a diehard Seminole fan and an avid cyclist. He and his daughter love playing video games, board games and attending SciFi and Comic book conventions.
